Children’s Book Week

Since this is National Children’s Book Week, I thought it would be fun to discuss some of our favorite books. I LOVE to read! It’s hard for me to pick just ONE favorite book, though, because there are so many great books out there! I love any book by Patricia Polacco–such as My Rotten Red Headed Older Brother, When Lightning Comes in a Jar, and Thank You, Mr. Falker. I also love Holes, the Little House on the Prairie books, Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing, and Tale of Despereaux. I’m also really enjoying the book I’m reading to my class right now–which is Gregor the Overlander. If I had to pick just ONE favorite book, I think it would be Thank You, Mr. Falker because it inspires me to be the best teacher I can be. It’s about a girl who struggles with reading because she has a reading problem called dyslexia. She had one teacher who didn’t give up on her, but helped and encouraged her to keep trying. So, here’s my question for you. What is your favorite book and WHY?

Flat Stanley Project

I’m so excited about our Flat Stanley project! I can’t wait to see where all he will go! If you could send Flat Stanley anywhere in the world to learn about that place, where would it be and why?

Tale of Despereaux

We recently finished the book Tale of Despereaux, and I can’t wait for the movie to come out on Dec. 19th!  My favorite character in the book was Despereaux because he loves books and so do I. He also was different from all the other mice, but he didn’t let that bother him, and I respect him for that. Who was your favorite character and why?

Tim Oliphant

I don’t know about you, but I thought our assembly today with Tim Oliphant was AWESOME!! How neat to meet the guy who won the American Gladiators competition! Tim talked to us about how the choices we make today (whether good or bad) will affect us for the rest of our lives. What good decisions are YOU making right now that will help you later in life?

Fall Fun

I just love the fall! It’s probably my favorite season, in fact. I thought that it would be fun to list some things that I like about the fall, and I want you to do the same. Please include at least 5 things in your list. Here’s my list:

1. Going to the Pumpkin Patch with my boys
2. Carving pumpkins
3. Drinking hot, apple cider
4. Watching the leaves change colors
5. Cooler weather
6. Spending time with my family during Thanksgiving break

City of Ember

In the book City of Ember that we have been reading in class, it talked about how all the children of Ember go to school until they’re 12, and then they have to get a job and start working every day like the adults do. How would you feel if YOU had to do that, and what job would you want if you could pick any job in the world? Please type your answer in complete sentences.

Notes to Mrs. Voliva

This is a place for you to write me a note, ask me a question, or tell me whatever you would like for me to know! I look forward to hearing from you!

Welcome to 4th grade!

Hi, new 4th graders! I’m so excited to have you in my class, and I can’t wait to get to know you better! I want to introduce myself so you can get to know me a little better. My name is Mrs. Voliva, and this is my 7th year of teaching 4th grade. My husband Jim teaches PE and health in Forsyth, where we live. He is also the girls’ basketball coach and the boys’ golf coach. We have 2 wonderful boys, Cooper who is 3, and Colton who is 3 1/2 months. They are both TONS of fun, and I’m sure you’ll hear me talk about them A LOT! I love teaching 4th grade, and I’m excited to be in a new building. We already have something in common because this is a new school for you AND for me–so, we’ll be learning our way around together! I enjoy reading, shopping, playing with my boys, playing cards or board games with my friends and family, and being outside. I am looking forward to a great year, and I’m so glad that you’re in my class!
